Day 31, Made it this far!

Well, made it one whole month without missing a day. It's not easy, especially when you're tired after a long day at work, knowing you have to go out there and try and make a nice looking photo. They're not all great ones but at least I'm getting out there.

For todays photo, I couldn't decide if I liked it better in colour or B&W, any opinions?

Day 29, For those of you waiting

Got around to taking some belly pictures of my lovely wife today. We wanted to wait until she was showing enough. She's around 25 weeks. Couple of months and our little boy will be here!

Day 28, Repeat

I enjoyed yesterdays shot so much that I went out looking for more interesting leaves sunk in the snow. Found this one that was pretty deep down, I like how the surface is out of focus and you start getting detail as you go deeper in the photo.

Day 27, Nice and close

Lots of leaves have been popping out of the snow as it's been melting the past few days. This little guy caught my eye during my walk with the dog. The leaf was about the size of my index finger nail, I set my P7000 to macro and actually had the lens resting on the snow to keep it stable. So many photo opportunities wherever you look.

Day 26, Ski Chalet

Headed out to the Cold Lake ski chalet for the sunset. It was very cloudy over the lake but I feel that it worked out for this photo.

Day 25, Snowy Path

Thought I would use my snow shoe path as a foreground today. I like the curve in the path and how the image follows the rule of thirds vertically and horizontally.

Day 24, The lake is still frozen

Went out after work today praying for a sunset like last night, I guess that can't happen every night. However I am happy with what I came up with today. It's very hard to capture the shape of a snowdrift against the white snow. With the texture of the hard melted snow on the lake, it sticks out a little better. This was taken at the Provincial Park on the lake facing the marina.

Day 23, +3 Degrees? That can't be right.....

Can't believe how warm it was today. From below 35 to 3 degrees in a few days, welcome to Cold Lake. The melting snow makes for some nice highlights, I was trying to capture the rays of the sun with the impressive cloudscape. Didn't quite get what I was trying for but they can't all be winners.

Day 22, Shadows

The low position of the sun in the winter is great for long shadows, the challenge is to get the shot before your dog leaps by you to investigate what you seem to find so interesting... there goes the nice even snow.

This is Molly's alter ego; "Snowface" destroyer of calm and tranquil scenes.

Day 20, Claws

Weather is starting to warm up again thankfully. Was able to go for a decent excursion with the dog. I thought these twigs looked like claws sticking out of the snow, made for an interesting B&W.

Day 19, Rooftops

Took this one from my kitchen. I liked how the sun was hitting the snow on my neighbours roof so I grabbed my 70 to 200 with a 2x tele extender to compress the snowy roofs together. I like what I got as a result. Just be careful if you're taking photos of peoples roofs with a long lens, it could be taken the wrong way...

Day 17, Strange...but I like it

Didn't think I got much out of today's 2 minutes of picture taking that I did but I ended up with a B&W that I like for some strange reason. It's just a rusted pipe of some sorts that I photographed against the cloudy sky. I tweaked the black and white in lightroom. I think I just like the rough shapes and textures against the soft snow and sky.

Day 16, Not all dogs can sit still....

Looking at this image, you would think this is a calm relaxed dog being obedient for a treat. You would be wrong...... this is but one two hundredth of a second frozen in time. What you don't see is the carnage.... the destroyed roses.... torn seamless paper...

Ha ha, thanks for trying Coco, maybe next time. She did get a few treats and a couple of bites of roses out of it.

Day 15, It's nice and warm inside

A little cold outside today, so I decided to do some indoor photography. Valentines day is in about a month so I had Molly model for some stock photos today. She only destroyed 2 roses, apparently they taste good...

Day 14, Freezing your hair off.... literally

Ok, Amy Jo's hair didn't "freeze off" but it did freeze. This was taken about 15 minutes into our walk with the dog, needless to say we didn't stay out too long. I think tomorrow's daily photo will be an indoor one.

Day 13, Didn't even get out of my truck......yes, it's cold...

I did put the window down and turn off the engine while I took the photo, so there was some effort put into this. Also drove forward and back until I had a composition I liked. Can anyone guess where this is in Cold Lake?

Day 12, Natures B&W

Almost converted this one to black and white. It was so close that I decided to leave it, I find that the small hint of blue cast adds to the image. Hope it warms up soon, pretty cold out there, Molly's paws don't last very long in these temperatures.

Day 11, Right in your backyard

Well in this case, it was my front yard. You can take nice looking photos anywhere. The trick is to find interesting angles with nice clean backgrounds. I've always liked the trees in my front yard when they are covered in snow or frost, today the sky had a nice ripple of clouds so I went out with my point and shoot and made this image. Nice and close and I'm happy with the results. Has nothing to do with me being tired today......

As I uploaded my daily photo from my camera I saw a photo I took the other day that I completely forgot about. This is the reason I like having a small point and shoot camera with me even when I'm using my DSLR. The other day at the park I was taking pictures and when I checked my settings I saw the perfect snowflake.

If I didn't have my other camera with me, this photo would of never happened. The pic bellow is the original unedited version of the top photo.

And for Tammy, no, I wasn't just using the snowman setting............

Day 10, A little chilly out there...

Pretty cold today compared to last week. Went snowshoeing on the African bike trail behind Brady Heights. This is a view of the neighbourhood on the way back. I love having all these trails in my backyard, I couldn't ask for a better place to live. In Cold Lake that is.

Day 9, This doesn't seem right

I know this is the universal "children at play" sign but it just didn't seem right with all the snow. I think a kid with a hockey stick would make more sense in Canada. Maybe it's just me......

Day 8, Got an iPhone 4

Just picked up my new iPhone today, so the creativity factor is pretty low at the moment. I'm very impressed with the built in camera. Pretty soon there won't be a market for point and shoots anymore. This iPhone takes better photos than my first digital camera. As Chase Jarvis says, the best camera is the one you have with you. The above photo is Molly wondering what could be more interesting than her.......

Day 7, Negative space

I started adding lots of "empty" space in my photos for stock because it makes it easier for designers to add text. Now I just find it looks nice. For some reason I feel that it simplifies the image, if I cropped the sky out in this one, it would look too busy for me.

Day 5, Molly lost her leash......

Molly's walk was cut short today after I noticed she had somehow "lost" her leash. I leave it on because she likes chasing snowmobiles, this way I can just grab it when I hear them coming. Well, now it's gone, she probably buried it after it came off thinking she wouldn't have to have one anymore....

Just before that happened I was trying to get a decent looking shot of the fence post with the frosty forest in the background...... I didn't quite get what I was trying for before I had to leave. You'll notice the image tends to draw your eye to the right. To make it more appealing, I would have had to reposition myself so I could get the post in the left side of the frame and then the forest on the right, balancing out the image.

On a positive note, Molly walked right next to me on the way back home, without a leash!

Day 4, Snow shoes that sink in slush and then freeze get real heavy......

As the title says, apparently marshes don't completely freeze in the winter, so be careful if you're wandering out there. I love frosty days like today.

Day 3, B&W

Never really got into B&W photography so I'm going to start experimenting with it once in a while. Took this from "Cold Lake" at the provincial park while walking the dog today.

Day 2, Winter Isolations

One great thing about the winter is that the snow hides a lot of distracting backgrounds which makes it way easier to pick out interesting shapes and lines for some simple shots like this one. Click on the photo to see where the borders are.

Day 1, Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a good time celebrating new years eve last night. I'm off to a good start today. Went out with all my gear to take some wintery images at the park, I get there, see some nice looking scenery, pull out my camera, set up my tripod.......wait a second, why won't my camera connect to my tripod? Oh, I didn't bring my tripod plate.......... I managed to get this really neat abstract of some snow drifts. The provincial park is really nice right now and the trails are nicely groomed. Happy new year everyone!
