Day 151, Black and White to the rescue

Spotted a beaver in the lake behind McDonalds today so I grabbed a few shots. The colors were really bad because of the harsh lighting. I was just going to delete them all and then I thought, maybe it would look good as a black and white. I think it works.

Day 149, Looks good, tastes........ ok I guess

Tonights culinary experiment started off looking pretty good...... Would be good with some jalapeno peppers. Too much cream cheese for mini bell peppers. Just to be clear, this was my food experiment, not Amy Jo's. She would never mess up a recipe.....

Day 148, Green

Did you know the colour green was relaxing to the eyes? I'm not sure if it's true but it's something everyone use to say when I did competitive shooting. If your eyes get tired, look at something green for a bit. I guess it worked, could of just been in my head, either way I like the colour green. Anyone who's been stuck in a desert for extended periods of time probably also appreciates the green scenery this time of year.

Day 147, Looking Down

I've been waiting for the background to be just right for this photo. When I saw the rays of the sun peering thru the clouds I knew I had it. Also happy I got to do a black and white photo today. I'm quite happy with this one.

Day 146, Sleeping Cutie

I know, the headline is cheesy. I'm a new dad, I'm allowed. This was his first time actually sleeping in his crib, well, naping would be a better word.

Day 145, I didn't think there was such a thing as non pickled beets...

I've just recently discovered oven roasted beets and let me tell you, they are delicious. A little bit of olive oil, some thyme, salt and pepper then roast for about an hour with some carrots and any other root vegetable and voila, delicious side.

I just shot this with my P7000 with SB600 on TTL bounced of the ceiling.

This is me, take two.

After the reaction I got from my "not smiling" photo a couple weeks ago, I decided to ask my friend Heidi to take my portrait. So yesterday evening we went out looking for some wildlife and she got some great shots of me with a smile. Wasn't hard to smile, I kept laughing cause I could see the mosquitos bitting her on the forehead every time she stood still to take a shot. As for me, it was "swat.... pose.... swat.... pose ..... swat...... pose" I photoshoped at least 50 mosquitos out of this photo. Thanks again Heidi, great job!

If you want to see some more of Heidi's amazing work, check out her website here.

Day 143, Taking advantage of the wind

I've been waiting for a dark and windy day to get some nice water blur images of the marina. Still learning how to use my tilt shift lens so I didn't come back with as many images as I would of liked. Might have to go back out tonight and get a few more angles.

I was able to keep the lamp posts from looking warped with the shift feature for this one. Filters I used were, 5 stop ND, 2 stop hard graduated ND and a light warming polarizer.

How to photograph the Canadian Rockies

You may have noticed this photo on the side bar of my blog. If you click on the photo it will bring you to the "How to photograph the Canadian Rockies" web site. This site was started by Darwin Wiggett, my greatest inspiration for landscape photography.

Many of you have seen my photos from my recent trip to the rockies, well Darwin was my guide. If you are heading to the rockies and want to know where all the best locations are, I highly recommend his ebooks. He has a book that covers each specific region of the rockies in great detail (you even get GPS coordinates). At 10 dollars a piece, you can't go wrong.

Even if you are not a photographer and you just want to go sight seeing, these ebooks will get you to the best spots at the best times. The nice thing is that you can put them on your smart phone and have them with you while you travel.

Disclosure; If you buy any of his books by going thru the link on my site I will get a small commission, but I don't promote anything I don't believe in. And I've bought all his ebooks, they are a must have for anyone wishing to photograph the Canadian rockies.

Day 141, Bobby's new ride

Had one of my good friends come visit for a night this week. Had some BBQ and a few drinks last night. Today we spent the day out on the road with our bikes. Bob just got a new ride so I had to make a nice photo of him and his new toy. This is the one I liked the best. Thanks for stopping by Bob, it was nice having you over.

Day 138, Accidental art

I tried tracking this duck as he flew by, I like the effect I got from the slow shutter speed. All the ripples in the water really make for some interesting lines.

Day 137, Forgot to stop...

Went for a ride tonight with full intentions on stoping to make a photo for my daily post. Well I forgot.... I was having too good of a time just cruising around. This photo is the moment I remembered that I had my camera. I decided to take a photo of that view because it's something that I really missed. I like it better when I'm about to take the bike out but it's the same view.

Day 136, I love my new tilt shift lens!

Wow, is it ever easy to make a pano with a tilt shift lens. Everything just lines up. As for the focusing, that's a different story.

Under construction

Having a few issues.... thank you for being patient. Probably a week before the transition is complete. I may loose a few posts in the process but I'm trying to keep everything if I can.

Day 133, iPhone Pano

Decided to take a panoramic photo with my iphone today. I'm curious to see how good of quality I could make one. I might rig something up to attach my iPhone to my tripod and do a proper one. This wasn't bad for a quick handheld 5 photo stitch tho.

Day 132, Déjà vu?

Pretty sure I've already taken a photo of this exact same scene. Much more colour in this one tho, so it's different.

Day 131, Self Portrait

Set up a makeshift studio in my basement to do some stock photography this week. Here's just a quick shot I took while testing out the lighting. Not my best photo but it's been a long time since I posted a photo of me. So for those who don't know me...... this is me.

Day 130, Back to nature

The insects are so much prettier here than they were in Afghanistan.

Here's what I was shooting last year.....

Day 129, Outgrowing the furniture already

Decided I would try and see if Jacob was big enough for the little rocking chair Heidi lent me, guess he's too big already! They sure aren't kidding when they say it goes by way too fast. Thanks for lending us the chair Heidi!

This was a one light set up. Seamless black background, one shoot thru umbrella camera left at about 45Deg with a white reflector just outside the frame on the right. That's about it for this shot. I did darken the background in lightroom.

Day 128, Jacob and his new ride

Sporting his blue furs cruising around in his new swing. Happy mothers day to all the mothers out there!

For the photographers- I went into aperture priority mode with +1.3 EV's, SB900 Flash on full TTL mode bounced into the white ceiling. I was also standing on a chair to get this angle. Cuteness factor was all done by Jacob, didn't need to add anything for that.

Day 126, The Lake is melting!

Maybe all the ice will be gone by July.....

Don't forget to stop by Beantrees tonight for the Spring art show! Or pop in tomorrow, there will be someone there from the Art society all day.

Cold Lake Visual Arts Society Spring Show! (Day 124)

This weekend is the CLVAS annual Spring show. Today we all got together and did a big clean up / rearrange the gallery. Not only did we mix things up, there's lots of new artwork as well! There's still a few things left to do before the show so the door to the gallery will be closed until the weekend.

All Cold Lake residents are invited to come and join us on Friday night from 7pm until 9pm for some wine, cheese and art exhibition. Beantrees will be closed, so just go to the Art alleyway and the back door leading to the gallery will be open. We will be holding a silent auction until the end of day Saturday, now's your chance to get some original art at great prices!

As you can see, the walls are full! And it's all original art from Cold Lake artists.

So don't be shy, we are a great bunch of people. Even if you can't make it out on friday for the opening, we'll be around all day saturday. We also have a special feature on Cold Lake, the actual Lake, not the city. Every artist came up with a piece that had to include the lake in their vision. Pretty neat to see so many different works come out of the same location.

If you are an artist and want to get to know some crazy like minded people, come on down, we are always looking for new members. If you carve, sculpt or even do pottery, definitely let us know.

And make sure to check out our facebook page! Click on the "Like" button if you want to be updated on what the Arts Society is up too! It's good as a warning as well if you are trying to avoid all artists, so either way, "Like" our page.

See you on Friday.

Day 123, Let the thawing begin!

The lake is finally starting to melt. Can't wait to get some nice photos this summer. I've also increased the size of the photos I will be posting. Hope you can see things better!

Day 122, Can you see the flavour?

This smelt so good I wanted to capture the waves of steam coming out from the pan. Pretty soon I'll be venturing out for some food photography. Stay tuned for some of my favourite restaurants and dishes in the Lakeland.

Day 121, Summer is coming

Took a drive out to the North Bay cabins today. The lake is starting to melt, the road is good, lots of wildlife around. It's going to be a great summer!
