Day 210, Machine

I'm currently participating in David Hobby's Lighting Bootcamp 3. The current assignment was to photograph an "object" that was relevant to your community. So I headed to the Cold Lake museum in search of something relevant that caught my eye. If you mention Cold Lake to any Canadian two things pop in their head, Oil and Air Force Base. Being in the air force, I decided to explore the oil industry so I could actually learn something. I headed to our local museum to find something interesting to use for my photograph. Lucky me, the curator is one of my good friends Linda Dunn, she gave me an excellent tour and lots of great information.

As soon as I saw the oil rig drill bits I knew I had to photograph them. They where displayed on these metal grate stands which complemented them very well. I played with two lights for a bit but ended up getting rid of one and going real simple. These are some of the smaller drill bits used to drill the holes used for dropping dynamite to break up rock.

Lighting info for those who are curious. Shot from above, one snooted SB600 with a red gel directly beneath pointing up set at 1/2 power. ISO 100, 250th second f8. Nikon D300s with Tokina 11 to 16mm set to 16mm.

I really like the Dark metal with the bright red.

Thanks again for the great tour Linda!

Day 208, Get your photos up on your walls

We've got lots of photos of Jacob since April but we are only starting to put some up on the walls now. With digital I find it very easy to just leave photos on the computer where they get forgotten in time.

To me nothing looks better than an appropriate size print on a wall. So get your family photos out of your computer and on to your walls! Right now we are working on a "collage" for Jacobs room. I'll post a photo once we have it up.

The photo above was for my office, one of my favorites of Jacob (I find he looks like Yoda in this one).

Day 206, $$$

Amy Jo cleaned out all the change in her purse. She told me I could do whatever I wanted with it. So I made Art!

Day 205, I'm so cool

Jacob thinking he's all cool with his new hat. I'm jealous....

I'll try and take a photo of something other than a baby tomorrow...

Day 204, Jacob's new friend!

Jacob finally got to meet his little friend Brooke today. It's funny how everyone ends up having babies around the same time. Mike and Gina are some of our good friends from when we were all in Gagetown. Their beautiful little girl Brooke is only a week older than Jacob. They told us Jacob is going to be on the list of "Allowed to date" when she's older. Guess we'll have to raise him to be a gentleman.

It was really nice seing you guys again, you have a beautiful little girl.

Day 202, What is it?

First person to guess what this is wins their choice of any of my fine art 8 x 10 print. Be specific. Winner has to post his or her answear on the blog. Just select Name/URL from the drop down list to leave a comment. Good luck!

Day 201, What's going on here?

Jacob doesn't get out much but every time he does, he always has this "intrigued" look on his face. Like he's thinking, "What's going on here.... why am I moving backwards, why is it so bumpy and why is it so bright?"

Day 200, Todays post is brought to you by the letter W

W for Wednesday. Almost the weekend. After shooting my keyboard with my macro lens, I realize how dirty it is..... Time for a little bit of office cleaning I think.

Day 199, Umbrella.... or something

Not quite sure what I ended up with for todays photo. I took out my macro lens and decided to shoot up at this plant we have in the kitchen with the bright window as the background. Then I isolated this lone leaf in photoshop. Kinda cool but I think I want to try this shot again with some flash sometime.

Day 198, I take too many photos

Just got my memory cards back from Brandi of Vintage photography. I second shot a wedding with her on saturday and handed over the cards at the end of the night. Now that I have them back, I'm realizing that I shoot way to much. Sorry Brandi.... She's got a lot of photos to go thru. Being my first one I was a bit nervous and over did it I guess. Now I know for next time. We had a great time and captured some great moments. Marc and Kate are going to be very happy!

So Day 198 was shot as I waited and waited and waited as my cards uploaded. I just grabbed my macro lens, a flash and a lumiquest softbox 3 and took some close ups. I love experimenting with off camera flash.

Day 197, Color in food

Was about to cut up some fresh peppers for a salad, then I noticed the nice bright colours. So here's day 197 of my 365 project.

Day 196, New Experiences

Going out to shoot a wedding with Vintage Crush Photography this afternoon. This is going to be my first wedding photography experience, can't wait! So far it looks like a beautiful day for an outdoor wedding. Took Molly for a little swim this morning, water level is nice and high. Stay away Rain.

Day 195, Can't decide what I need???

Second shooting a wedding for Vintage Crush Photography tomorrow and I can't decide what I need to bring with me...... Maybe I'll just take everything! Very excited. Should be a very beautiful day for an outdoor wedding. Can't wait!

Day 194, Canvases Everywhere's

Had quite a few boxes waiting for me when I got home today. Got a bunch of canvases for Jacob's room, a few for the art gallery in Beantrees and some for Cathy and Daren's Family Collection. I love canvas wraps!

Day 193, Cold Lake is a lot greener than I thought...

So I'm back to work this week and I've been doing a few test flights in the Griffon. My last test flight I had done was in Afghanistan last summer, let me tell you, the view is quite different over here. But I really didn't think it was that green in Cold lake? Maybe it's all the rain we've been getting but it is really green from up there.

Most of the flight I had my face shoved into the computer looking at vibration results. Once I had the numbers we needed I pulled out my small point and shoot and grabbed a few shots on the way back to base. I think the overcast sky helps darken and intensify the green.

Day 192, Guess Who?

That's right, it's Jacob again. I was sitting with him on my lap while Amy Jo was folding laundry. When she lifted up a sheet to fold it I thought it would make a great background! She entertained me for a few minutes while I made some shots of Jacobs little feet. I'll do something other than Jacob or Molly tomorrow, promise.

Day 190, Bringing back history

I've had this photo of my dad since I was a kid. I'll have to ask him but I think it was taken in the late 70's at some point. At least that's what the hair tells me. It's been in a frame on a wall in my house, slowly deteriorating for the last few years. So I thought I'd test my photoshop skills and restore it as best as posible. The photo above is my first hours work on it, many more to come. This will be an ongoing project for me. Check out what the original looks like. I'm pretty happy with what I've done so far.

Pretty rough shape. Glad I could save it before it was completely gone.

Day 189, Hypnotic

I was sitting in my office tonight listening to an audio book, just staring at the ceiling fan, going into a trance..... Hey, that'd be a neet photo! But how to capture the feeling.... So I played around with the shutter speed and aperture until I got something that conveyed the feeling I had while staring at it. A little processing in silver effex and voila. A simple household object but I like it.

Day 188, Wanna fight about it?

Jacob has started smiling quite a bit now so I was trying to capture one of them on camera. That's until he got upset with me being all up in his face and put his fists up. I backed down, I'm not fighting a baby.

Day 186, I forgot

Just about to go to bed and I remembered I didn't take a photo for the blog today. Looking for something to take a photo off, it came to me that I had taken some photos earlier of me and Jacob. I actually took those to see if his eyes were closed. Nope, not a good sleep day for Jacob. Just played around in Silver Efex Pro 2 for a few minutes to make it more interesting. I'm off to bed.

Day 185, Face

Look at those eyes! In case your wondering, the yellow in his left one is just the yellow wall in his room, nothing to worry about.

Artist Profile: Linde Dunn (Day 184)

Since I joined the Cold Lake Visual Art Society (CLVAS) last year, I noticed that there wasn't a lot of exposure for the artists in our Community. So I'm taking on a personal project to expose them all! What better way to start than at the top, the President of CLVAS, Linde Dunn.

Who is she? She's Linde Dunn, president of CLVAS and has been for 5 out of the 11 years on the executive. Her aim is to keep the Arts Society alive and to spread culture in our little community. She regularly works with the Cold Lake library, offering children's art programs, stay tuned, some more coming this fall. During the day you can find her at the Cold Lake Museums where she has been the curator for the past 5 years. She is also known as one of the "arts and cultural people" in the community. If you have any interest in art, you know who she is.

Linde was actually born in France, good start for an artist I think. Her family moved to Cold Lake when she was one and a half, so she's pretty much from here. She did manage to escape to Calgary and Edmonton for a period of 16 years, where she worked and studied art.

Her major was in textiles but she practices many forms of art. From printing on cloth, weaving, clothing fashion design to painting acrylic and mixed media such as colages. She is very close to completing her fine Arts Degree.

She started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil. She first realized she could have a career in art while reading a children's book to her younger brother, when she noticed that there was an illustrator and an author credited for producing the book. To this day she keeps that dream alive by working on writing and illustrating children's books as well as fairy tale inspired graphic novels.

If you love color, you'll love Linde's art! Her work can be seen in the CLVAS art galleri in Beantrees as well as the Cold Lake Museums. If you can't wait, go check out her galleries on her facebook page where you can also get to know her a little better.

or her personal page

She can also be contacted at lindun@telus.net for all art related inquiries.

Thanks again Linde for letting me into your home to bombard you with questions and take your portrait. (she also makes the best coffee in town)

Who's in charge of the Orr household? (Day 183)

Well like any family with kids, it's certainly not the adults in the house that run things.

I had an amazing shoot with with Daren, Cathy, Aiden and Marissa yesterday. Oh, and Coco of course. Thanks again for letting me take your family portraits, you guys looked great!

Stay tuned, I'll be putting up a few more of my favourites on my facebook page in the next few days.

Heidi and Dancer (Day 182)

Had a great time tonight doing portraits for my good friend, Heidi Gardner. Also a photographer. A few months ago she helped me out and did my portraits for my website and facebook page. Was about time I returned the favor. So here she is with her horse, Dancer.

Day 181, Is that a dolphin?

Nope, it's Molly. This is a very badly done two photo stitch. I failed at capturing two images that lined up really good, so this is the end result. I didn't want to spend too much time working on it with these files. This is something I plan on re doing, but with better execution in camera.

Happy Canada day!
